Elizabeth is concerned that we are not caring for our pensioners who have cared for us and if elected, this will be one of the items on her agenda.

Pictured here with her Uncle, Amedeo Re who was raised in Northbridge, turned 100 on the 2 February 2010 and celebrated with 148 close relatives in Perth, Elizabeth feels a strong connection with the older generation.

Her Uncle was one of the founders of the WA Italian Club 75 years ago.

Elizabeth’s grandparents came out 125 years ago from Italy (on one side) and 80 years ago from Scotland (on the other), pioneering the Australia we see today.

Elizabeth sees the importance of families, with elders living longer, we need to teach our children to grow up and respect the senior members of our community.

Dear Supporters

As you are aware I have been involved in many community and sporting issues over the years and have been very active in getting accountability, consistency and good governance into the Council decision making, because I believe in making a difference.

In 2008 I was asked to assist a group of people with regard to raising the awareness of domestic violence ( through the WOW and Alana’s project ) and finally after two years of motions and reports to Council, they have agreed to planting a tree and have also agreed to placing an awareness plaque in the ground in the Stirling Gardens ( north eastern end of the Stirling Memorial Gardens – adjacent to Telford Crescent, past the Stirling Train Station , see picture above).

I am very concerned that the family and traditional values of our Australian society are being lost and believe that most of the undesirable cultural change has been attributed to the increase in domestic violence which has a long lasting affect on our children. One of the sides of this is the bullying culture that has developed and if not addressed in the school develops into work place bullies and then eventually into home bullies and the circle of family domestic violence continues.

Family violence is observed through all cultures, whether you are male or female, young or old, rich or poor, no boundaries are known for this dilemma that is apparent world wide and is encroaching on the lives of decent citizens and impacting on the lives of the next generation to come.

The federal government needs to support school community health nurses to pick up the signs of abuse and disabilities and our teachers need additional resources to address these issues to enable the children not to have their education compromised by external influences and finally, additional support is needed for the parents and the grandparents to enable them to stop the cycle and encourage strong Australian values.

There has been over the last two years on average 50 cases each week, of domestic violence reported to the police within the City of Stirling area. According to the ABS one in every three women are subjected to some form of domestic violence in their life time. This is also associated with drug abuse and in turn there is a direct correlation with neglect and abuse of children. Access Economics found that during the period of 2002 and 2003, the estimated financial cost of family domestic violence in the Australian community was $8.1 Billion and the psychological cost for our future society is immeasurable!

Violence is increasing everywhere in our community and resources are needed now to be injected into the root of the issue and strategies need to be in place so that the general population can feel safe in our own homes and in the streets.

I am prepared to stand up for the grandparents and parents of today and our children of the future and I hope that you will support me and stand up with me, as I take on the challenge of running for the Federal seat of Stirling in the 2010 election on the 21 August.

I will be launching my campaign Thursday 29 July 5pm in Stirling gardens and I hope you will be able to join me as I push to make a difference and remember:

“If one Good person stands up, then Good people will follow, then Good things will happen !!!”, thanks, Elizabeth.

Visiting one of the reserves in Dianella, Elizabeth was approached by Andrew Solich, a local father who was out with his children enjoying the play equipment at the local reserve.

“I’m just wondering if there is anything the Council can do about providing some shade at the playground,” asked Andrew. ”A lot of the local kids come down to this park to play but there really isn’t any shade over the play equipment which means that the equipment can be too hot to play on in summer and too wet in winter. Just seems a shame that the kids can’t play here all year round and enjoy the equipment.”

Elizabeth explained to Mr Solich that it depends on where the equipment is located as to whether or not it would qualify for the shade sails to be added to the equipment.

Having raised two boys herself, Elizabeth appreciates that parents have a tough job on their hands, especially teaching children the value of public space, of community service and how to share public space harmoniously.

Elizabeth also made an impression on 12 year old, Sarah Solich, as she discussed with her about waste management.

“We need to encourage our young people to be proactive in our communities,” says Elizabeth. ”Young people have a lot to give and just need us to guide them.”

Small Business are always getting a raw deal and in her role as a Health Officer for the Western Australian government, Elizabeth has seen more than her fair share of the delays that can occur due to red tape.

Whilst shopping at Trigg, Elizabeth called past one of the restaurants at the Trigg Shopping Centre and had a quick chat with Adam Zenick.

“There’s too much red tape for small businesses,” said Adam. ”It’s hard enough finding good staff and making a living without the bureaucratic red tape. I like to give the young kids a go in my business, so fair go Council.”

Elizabeth reassured Adam that she is doing her best to support the small businesses in the City of Stirling.

“Lucky we’ve got you on Council, Liz,” said Adam.

Elizabeth supports small businesses as they are vital for our sustainable future and diverse lifestyle, as they suit local people, part timers, parents and give the youth of today not only work and monetary skills but also the understanding of being part of the business family and how to function in a business team work environment.

Elizabeth Re is aware of the struggle most small business owners have to stay in business and is willing to go the extra mile to support them.

On a trip down to Scarborough Beach, Elizabeth Re was stopped by a local couple, Allen & Eileen Hopkins who wanted to know what was happening with the latest building developments at Scarborough Beach.

Allen & Eileen have been very happily married for over 53 years, walk every day down at Scarborough Beach and have lived for many years in the area. They are concerned about the building developments and the high rise units that are planned for the area directly opposite the ampitheatre.

There is currently quite a bit of council work taking place in the area, with council responding to the request for better footpaths. So new footpaths are being laid, which has caused quite a bit of disruption to the carparks. Local residents appreciate the new footpaths but are a little frustrated by all the changes taking place.

“You’re not going to let them build more high rise and spoil our beach are you?” asked Eileen seriously.

“We’ve been happily married for over 53 years and love coming to Scarborough Beach,” commented Allen.

Assuring them both that she would do all in her power to ensure the voice of the people is represented, the couple seemed reassured to know there is someone on Council who listens to the hearts of the people.

Elizabeth Re is committed to being the voice of the people on the issue of property development in the Stirling region.

If you missed the Health Department’s 2010 WOW Week, then here is the speech delivered by Elizabeth Re.

2010 WOW week

ERE presentation I May 2010 THEME

The theme of Women in Wellness for 2010 , is to

MOVE MORE.. EAT WELL.. FEEL GOOD.. LOOK GOOD

So where do we start, we need to look at the basics!

what we do and what we eat ! sustainability !

Despite Australia having one of the highest life expectancies in the world, many Australians suffer from chronic illness. Chronic diseases – such as some cancers, heart disease and type 2 diabetes – are estimated to be responsible for nearly 80 per cent of the total deaths and injury in Australia.

Evidence has shown that certain lifestyle behaviours promote the onset of chronic disease. These include being overweight (obese), not getting enough physical activity, smoking, alcohol and drug consumption and unhealthy eating.

The aim of this program is to promote and facilitate understanding, appreciation and a positive attitude towards adopting healthy eating, physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight.

Obesity, tobacco and alcohol feature in the top seven preventable risk factors that influence the burden of disease, approximately 32% of Australia’s total burden of disease can be attributed to these risk factors

The prevalence of overweight and obesity in Australia has been steadily increasing over the past 30 years.

In only 15 years, from 1990 to 2005, the number of overweight and obese Australian adults increased by 2.8 million.

( which is more than the whole population of western Australia )

Recent national data on the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children, available from the National Children’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey 2007, indicated 17% of 2–16-year-olds were overweight and

6% obese

Mention the newspaper article as this issue is very current

A British obesity expert has warned of alarming rates of overweight children in WA, with an estimated 90,000 children as young as four carrying too much weight. International Obesity Taskforce policy chief Tim Lobstein estimated 6000 WA children aged four to 18 had high blood pressure, 13,500 had high cholesterol and more than 27,000 had abnormal insulin levels. About 10,000 had metabolic syndrome, a deadly cluster of risk factors for heart disease and stroke usually only seen in adults. Dr Lobstein, brought to Perth by Curtin University and Healthway, said almost one million WA adults were overweight or obese. The combined numbers would swamp GPs, who would be unable to cope with the tidal wave of weight-related illness…Dr Lobstein said governments needed to do more to combat childhood obesity, including restricting the number of fast food outlets near schools and addressing the tax on junk food versus healthy products. Curtin University professor of health policy Mike Daube said the implications of the obesity epidemic were frightening. “We were world leaders in healthy lifestyles, but we are now rapidly becoming world leaders in overweight and obesity,” he said. A Melbourne anaesthetist has also warned growing numbers of obese patient are creating a major headache for Australian hospitals and doctors.

So what can we do ? What can you do ?

We can eat differently such as eating and cooking more at home, teach our kids that a corn on the cob is better and more fun to eat than a takeaway hamburger !

Instead of getting in the car to buy the corn from the shop, walk to the shop, bring a footy along the way, play on the swings in the park on the way home from the shop ( work up an appetite ) . Instead of doing one big shop once a week, take several trips to the shop, small loads and walk each time and think about what you are buying, such as buy the ingredients to make a carrot cake with the kids and not one already made. Get the kids to plant the top of the carrot on the garden and let them watch nature at work as it grows and then it can be picked and the top cut off again and into the garden and so they healthy circle of eating and cooking and growing continues, while our children realize the goodness of food and stay healthy

We need to ensure that are children are playing team sports which is good for their mental and physical health and by example of the kids watching parents and adults eat properly and keep fit, even if it is just walking the dog .

Instead of the kids turning the television on in the morning, take the dog go for a walk around the block or go down to the park and catch butterflies or count the birds ? how many black ones, white ones ? green ones ? .

Meet your friends at the beach, the river or the park, get the kids out and about so we can stay and grow healthy together

The more exercise we do , the better food we eat the better we will all feel and the less time we will spend feeling sick or being at the doctors so remember

A small change in our lifestyle, our habits, and our behaviour can lead to a huge change in our quality of Life

So what do we do ? Can I hear you ?

MOVE MORE.. EAT WELL.. FEEL GOOD.. LOOK GOOD

Say about the other venues for WOW week and say go into your local library or website and they will tell you more what’s on www.nmahs.health.wa.gov.au

It has taken nearly thirty years to reduce smoking in the community, lets not take thirty years to address obesity

So don’t forget, we need to be spend the money we earn on healthy food and lots of activity as that will save us money in the long run

And remember :

MOVE MORE.. EAT WELL.. FEEL GOOD.. LOOK GOOD

Thanks for being part of our day to make Western Australians the healthiest state in Australia

The National Steering Committee for the Year of Women in Local Government has announced 21 ambassadors for its 2010 celebrations. Over the next 18 months these ambassadors will undertake the role of champions and role models for the advancement of women in Local Government and will each make a valuable contribution to the success of the Year of Women in Local Government 2010.

• Rebecca Thomas – General Manager City Services – City of Holdfast Bay.
Steering Committee Chairman, Mr. Ray Pincombe, said “The task before the selection panel was a very difficult one, with over 60 outstanding nominations received. These ambassadors provide a great representation of the varied roles and responsibilities that exist within local government. Each ambassador is committed to promoting the advancement of women within the sector, both in management and at the council level and they have great stories to tell about their own personal journeys in local government”.
The topic of women in local government and in particular women in management and leadership positions in local government has been around for a long time. All levels of government are acutely aware of the barriers facing women, yet nationally only a handful of councils are addressing the issue. Currently women in senior management roles represent only 20% of the local government workforce; a representation that has not changed since 1996. Only 5% of chief executives or general managers are women, and women represent less than 30% of all elected members.

Elizabeth Re meets former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd at the launch of the Women in Politics publication in which she is featured along with 11 other women in politics in Australia.

Elizabeth Re says she was surprised and honored at being named an ambassador for the Year of Women in Local Government.

The honour saw her fly to Canberra to meet with the other delegates and attend the launch of the “Women in Leadership” publication, a book that features 12 women in politics, with a double page feature on Elizabeth’s contribution and her vision for women in leadership.

“If someone had said to me that I would have been in Canberra two weeks ago, having dinner at Parliament house withPrime Minster Rudd before his demise and that I was going to be one of the twelve women who were selected from all the women in Local, State and Federal parliament in Australia, to be written about in the book ” Women in Politics ” and that they would put the quote I gave them on the front cover, I would have to say that you were dreaming. But the reality is, that’s exactly what has happened and I’m surprised and thrilled,” says Elizabeth.

“The main thing I would like to achieve is to encourage all the good people ( men and women ) to stand up and give women a chance ( even just the opportunity to act in positions ) and when these good people come forward it will help stamp out the discrimination and bullying that is still so prevalent in the workplace today and is the main deterrent why women have not been utilized to their best potential,” continues Elizabeth.

Footpaths in Stirling are one of the most valuable assets that a community can use to feel like they are safe and also allow an abundance of happiness and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

Whether you are walking your dog , taking your kids on bikes, pushing a pram, in a wheels chair, pushing a frame or having to use a walking stick, you want the peace of mind that you are not going to be injured during this process.

Elizabeth Re remembers when her oldest son was born and he was not a sleeper, so rather than wake the whole household, she used to walk him around Jackadder Lake, and there was no footpath, so it was difficult in the long grass and dangerous on the roads. She wrote to the Stirling Council about establishing a footpath around the lake and was told NO!

Seven years later when her boys were learning to ride their bikes, Elizabeth went to a council meeting with a petition for a footpath to be established around the lake and was again advised, “No!”, as a footpath would bring too many people to the Park!

Fifteen years later when Elizabeth was elected into the Council of the City of Stirling, Elizabeth put forward at budget time for the construction of a footpath round Jackadder Lake, and through her persistence and against strong opposition, the footpath was finally passed and the footpath is used regularly by young and old people, who now feel safe and happy.

Elizabeth also had initial opposition to footpaths along Cedric street and more recently around Dongara Reserve in Innaloo, all of which have now been completed, much to the exhilaration and happiness of the community.

Elizabeth Re sees that good footpaths are essential in assisting people to develop sustainable lifestyles (ie walking to the shop etc) and careful planning is required. Councils need to heed the voice of the people on these issues.

Elizabeth has a vision for our young people. She recognises that they have a lot they can give to the community if we positively engage them.

Pictured here with Sarah Solich from Dianella, Elizabeth enjoyed working with Sarah at the WOW presentation in Forrest Chase.

Elizabeth met Sarah at the Princesses in Petticoats & Pearls event hosted by Women Can International Inc at The Lily of the Valley Cafe in Henley Brook in March 2010. Since then, Sarah has been getting more involved in supporting community events and was at WOW helping Kath Mazzella OAM from GAIN Inc (Gynaecological Awareness Information Network) to spread Sexual and Gynae Health Awareness information in the community.

Elizabeth and Sarah both enjoyed the event and discussed the level of support for young people.

Elizabeth sees the cost of education as ever increasing and feels that the HECS Debt needs to be reduced, more services for students provided and the HECS CPI abolished.

Having raised two sons and seeing them both through University Degree programs, Elizabeth understands that education is important and very costly and would like to see our young professionals less burdened financially as they begin their careers.

Elizabeth Re has also served on the City of Stirling Youth Advisory Committee and has a vision for young people and a good understanding of the challenges they face.

Elizabeth Re was invited as a special guest to the Princesses, Petticoats & Pearls event hosted by Women Can International Inc at the Lily of the Valley Cafe, Henley Brook on 6th March 2010 in celebration of International Women’s Day.

On the day Elizabeth helped out in many ways. She was the judge for the Fashion Parade, which included girls as young as 8 years through to the more senior women of over 70.

It was a fabulous fun day of frollicking with cups of tea and jam and scones on the lawn at the fabulous Lily of the Valley Cafe in Henley Brook in the Swan Valley.

Elizabeth also pulled the winning tickets out of a hat for the lucky door prizes and presented the awards for the best dressed and best model in the parade.

“It’s wonderful to see women from all the different generations getting together to celebrate International Women’s Day”, said Elizabeth. ”I can’t wait until next year and they’re expecting quite a bigger crowd now that the word is out what a great event it is.”

Hayley Solich, Chairperson and Founder of Women Can International Inc says, “Liz was fabulous. Had I realised how accomplished she was I would have created a speaking slot for her but it was a bit of a last minute invitation and we felt very privileged that she would support our event. She was so willing to jump in and help out with all aspects of the day. The world needs more people like Liz who are just willing to serve in whatever capacity is required. I really appreciated her flexibility and her lack of pretence.”

Elizabeth is committed to support community events and where possible does her best to put in an appearance to show the community her commitment to them.

WOODLANDS residents have expressed their concern about a new development that could see high voltage powerlines moved to within metres of homes and a childcare centre.

The powerlines are set to run down the centre of a realigned stretch of Ewen Street, which will be moved farther south to make way for a new development site, pending final approval from the City of Stirling.

But homeowners, whose properties back onto the site, say they are worried about the impact of powerlines running so close to their back yards.

Hakea Road resident Monique Wesley said it would be a “great concern” if the planned work was to go ahead.

“I have a one-year-old and a two-year-old, and I don’t really like the idea of them playing underneath powerlines without knowing what the long-term effects might be,” she said.

Doubleview ward councillor Elizabeth Re said she had spoken to several residents who were concerned about the close proximity of the proposed lines. “They’ve put the concrete footings in place for the poles, and we’re trying to stop it before they go in,” she said.

Western Power spokeswoman Marisa Chapman said a minimum 16-metre easement had been utilised between powerlines and buildings, including the recently opened Cuddly Bear Childcare Centre.

It’s disturbing that a lovely quite cul-de-sac should be encroached upon by such high voltage cabling. Unless the are was previously designated for such an installation (and it wasn’t), such devices should be kept well away from housing.

Doesn’t Cr Elizabeth Re live within meters of the proposed development?

COMPETITION for the position of Stirling Mayor is heating up, with as many as six councillors likely to nominate for the top job following the October 17 council elections.

Mayor David Boothman and former mayor Terry Tyzack will again vie for the head position after little separated the pair in mayoral voting at the 2007 election.

John Italiano, Rod Willox and Elizabeth Re have also revealed they will put their hands up for the role.

A sixth possible candidate, Coastal Ward councillor Bill Stewart, said he had yet to decide if he would run.

Councillors will elect the mayor at a special council meeting on October 20.

Cr Boothman said while he was focusing on getting re-elected to remain a Balga Ward councillor, he was keen to resume the mayoralty for another two years.

“I would like to throw my hat in the ring to be considered for another term,” he said. “I’ve worked very hard to form strong relationships with both Federal and State Governments, and the cohesion between the City’s officers and councillors is at an all-time high.”

Cr Tyzack, who has served two stints as mayor in the past three decades, said he would look for support from fellow councillors.

“If I’m successful as a candidate, I will make the necessary contact with new and existing councillors and put my hand up for mayor.”

Cr Italiano was looking to spearhead a more proactive approach to City projects.

“I believe we have got different directions that we need to take, because I don’t think we are moving forward as we need to be.”

Cr Willox said his “significant experience” would be an asset, while Cr Re said her communication and networking skills would help her succeed if she were to be elected as the City’s second female mayor.

Stirling differs from a number of local councils, using a system where the mayor is chosen by councillors and not ratepayers.

I definitely think Elizabeth Re is the next Mayor of the City of Stirling. I am in Elizabeth’s Doubleview Ward and know of her to be a tireless worker for our community. She has so much knowledge, not just about her ward, but the entire City of Stirling. There is no issue too small or too big for Elizabeth to take on. I do not know of any other person or Councillor so dedicated to the community and wish her luck for securing the job.

As a City of Stirling ratepayer, I think it is time for another female Mayor and I would like to nominate Councillor Elizabeth Re. Ms Re is passationate and works tirelessly for her electorate making a difference and getting things done. I am not in Ms Re’s Doubleview ward, but I have knowledge of her work and believe that as the Stirling Mayor she would be well received as she is a honest and very approachable person who is happy to take on and solve the hard issues. Ms Re would definitely be the best person to take the City of Stirling forward in the right direction for the future. Ms Re certainly has my vote and I hope she will be successful in her endeavours.

Stirling Councillor Elizabeth Re says she was surprised and honoured at being named an Ambassador for the Year of Women in Local Government.

STIRLING councillor Elizabeth Re says she was surprised and honored at being named an ambassador for the Year of Women in Local Government.

Cr Re was one of 21 people nationwide, including four West Australians, to be recognized as an official role model for next years celebrations.

The Woodlands resident was the only WA councillor chosen for the role.

Cr Re said she had not expected her hard work as a City of Stirling representative to be recognized on a national level.

“I was quite surprised, because people from all over Australia have been nominating, including both male and female Councilors and officers who are trying to promote the role of women in the workplace and the community”, she said.

“It was definitely a bit of a shock to be considered at that level. To find out I was the only councillor from WA to be named as an ambassador was just amazing.”

The Doubleview ward councillor has had a long involvement in local politics, including becoming the first female principle health and building surveyor in WA local government.

She was the eighth female councillor to be elected to the City of Stirling, and one of the first women to be included on the RAC board in WA.

“I like to think I have been an advocate of giving women a fair go and highlighting the challenges and capabilities of women in the workplace”, she said.

Cr Re, who has been a Stirling councillor since 2005 and was this month re-elected for another term, said she would use her role as ambassador to promote the positive role of local government for women.
